Post-Graduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency

Purpose

At Duke Regional Hospital, our PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program builds upon the education and outcomes achieved through a doctorate of pharmacy by developing clinically competent pharmacists prepared to deliver high‑quality, medication‑focused care to a broad range of patients. Graduates emerge with the skills necessary for board certification and are well equipped to continue training in a PGY2 residency program.

Our PGY1 residency offers a comprehensive and immersive year of professional growth within our community teaching hospital and the larger Duke University Health System. Residents gain accelerated experience in inpatient pharmacy practice, refine their clinical decision‑making abilities, participate in research and quality improvement initiatives, and develop strong leadership and communication skills essential for modern pharmacy practice.

By the end of the residency year, graduates of our PGY1 program are prepared to succeed as clinical pharmacists within institutional practice settings or advance their training through a PGY2 program aligned with their professional interests.
